North York General (NYG) is a leading community academic health care provider. The Phillips House Redevelopment Project (PHRP) will allow NYG to offer transitional or ambulatory mental health services to children, adolescents, young women and their families in an environment tailored to meet the scale and quality of the services they need. This change in location of services reduces the stigma associated with mental health while also providing therapeutic options to connect to nature with the redevelopment of its landscape.
SvN’s proposal was to increase the visibility of Phillips House within the campus through a new addition at the east of the existing house. Visitors to the new facility are presented with a wood-clad addition that orients visitors to a new entrance located between the new and existing building. This connection minimizes the impact to the existing heritage building. An entrance is provided through the garden. The stairs and landings to the entrance provide a gradual, relaxed progression to the building with uninterrupted connections to the garden. Visitor parking is proposed for the eastern portion of the site with an accessible entry provided at the north of the site. The accessible entry is connected to one of two drop-off options, creating a centralized reception area for both entrances.
