Knowledge and R&D – Practitioners Perspective

Facades are now recognized as being ever more important in a post pandemic world with rising expectations for durability, resilience and environmentally responsible performance. Canada continues to experience rapid population growth and the increasing demands for building development are challenging our capacity to deliver the high-performance buildings we need for a sustainable future. A number of critical issues for facades are emerging for the design, fabrication and construction professionals needed to deliver robust facades for new buildings and the retrofit of existing buildings.

Toronto Mayors Book Launch

Join us and ULI Toronto for the book launch for Mark Maloney’s Toronto Mayors where he will be in conversation with Steve Paikin, host of The Agenda on TVO.

Toronto Mayors is the first-ever look at all of the 65 prior Toronto mayors who have shaped the city. Spanning 19 decades and the growth of Toronto, from its origins as a dusty colonial outpost of just 9,200 residents, to a global business centre and metropolis of some three million, this compendium provides fascinating biographical detail on each of the city’s mayors.

An Interdisciplinary Design Approach

BAIDA and SvN invite you to an in-depth discussion and workshop on the Lynell Street development located in Pensacola, Florida. This new type of affordable housing provides a model to address the acute housing needs of the area while responding to the needs to protect and restore the nearby Carpenter Creek watershed.

Join us at our Toronto office to learn more about the project and the integrated team of architects, landscape architects, and planners work together to bring back the missing middle while honouring the local cultural heritage and wider climate goals. The presentation and workshop will be followed by a studio tour and networking opportunities.

This event is open to people at all points of their career, and will be eligible for OAA Continuing Education Credits.

ACO Toronto Heritage and Housing Symposium
Session: Addressing Affordability

For the past few years, ACO Toronto branch has hosted an annual heritage symposium - a one day event filled with talks and panel discussions from a wide variety of perspectives on a specific relevant theme. Past themes have included Main Streets, Modernist Schools, and Demolition.

The theme for this year is Heritage and Housing and our Director of Special Projects, Ian Chodikoff, will be moderating the Addressing Affordability session, a dynamic panel that will explore the relation, or perceived relation, between heritage and housing in Toronto.

Toronto has nearly 250 cranes, more than New York, Boston, LA, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington combined. Despite this, Toronto is facing a serious housing affordability crisis. At the same time, diverse cultural heritage is being erased in our city, from landmarks to everyday buildings. This session aims to explore the relation, or perceived relation, between heritage and housing in Toronto in 2023. Who are the communities, groups, and organizers working on affordable housing in this city? What role does heritage have on their work?

join the Toronto Society of Architects for a night of networking and relationship building as featured guests share their stories and advice as active volunteers in our community: from what motivates them to volunteer to how they balance their work, family, and volunteering obligations.

The featured guests for this event include Senior Associate Carolyn Fearman who volunteers for the Urban Land Institute, and Senior Architect Quan Thai who volunteers for the Toronto Society of Architects.

The slate of speakers represent a wide variety of volunteer roles and organizations, making this the perfect opportunity to get to know the many organizations working to make our industry and city better for all and how you can get involved.

RAIC 2023 Congress on Architecture

The RAIC Congress on Architecture brings professionals together to ignite action, strengthen connections, and share ideas on a single issue of importance to the profession. The 2023 RAIC Congress on Architecture will focus exclusively on Climate Action and Architecture in Canada informing the development of a Climate Action Plan. As part of the RAIC Climate Action Engagement and Enablement Plan Steering Committee, Senior Associate John Peterson will be there to discuss the organization’s work towards a Climate Action Engagement and Enablement Plan (CAEEP) and engage attendees on the development of the Climate Action Plan.
