The revitalization of Regent Park in Toronto, led by a partnership between Toronto Community Housing and The Daniels Corporation, has transformed Regent Park into a vibrant mixed-use community. The latest addition to the neighbourhood is The Sumach, an urban rental residence for active seniors developed by Chartwell Retirement Residences. The Sumach addresses the challenges of accommodating the population aged 75 and older, which will more than double in the next 20 years.
SvN provided the design, construction documentation and contract administration for this new 250,000 square foot senior’s residence. Completed in 2019, the 12-storey building features 332 suites consisting of studios, one- and two-bedroom suites, and three-bedroom townhomes.
Residents will be able to customize their services and activities based on their personal interests and abilities. The residence will offer a wide variety of amenities and activities, including 7,000 sq.ft. of retail space, a reading room, a theatre, exercise room, lounges and multipurpose rooms, garden plots, and outdoor barbeques with outdoor dining areas. A dining facility is provided for residents opting into the meal plan, and the bistro and café that are connected to the dining facility are open to the public.
The building is designed with flexibility to allow the adaptation of floors into assisted care levels to meet the changing needs of the residents as per the new B3 care occupancy under the Ontario Building Code.
