The Sumach reimagines seniors living in the heart of Toronto's Regent Park transformation. This 332-unit, 12-storey residence delivers an independent urban lifestyle for active seniors while contributing to street vitality through ground-floor retail, dining, and public café spaces that welcome the broader community.

The Sumach redefines senior housing by prioritizing active, independent living within a vibrant urban community. Seamlessly integrated into Regent Park's ongoing transformation, the building offers seniors access to the cultural richness and convenience of city life. Ground-floor retail space, a resident dining facility, and a public bistro and café bring the street to life, creating natural gathering spaces that connect residents to their evolving neighbourhood.

We designed The Sumach to go well beyond accessibility standards — not just meeting requirements, but truly supporting residents to age in place with dignity. While provincial rules require 15% accessible units, we delivered 68% accessible suites, including studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, and three-bedroom townhomes. Thoughtful design anticipate changing needs, from accessible garbage chute rooms with automatic doors to light switches and outlets placed at accessible heights, and blocking installed in corridors and washrooms to accommodate future grab bars. These details help residents adapt their homes as their needs evolve.

The Sumach contributes to the neighbourhood's environmental resilience incorporating green roofs and low-albedo materials to reduce heat island effects, while drought-tolerant native landscaping connects to the broader ecological systems of the community.
