‘Emerging New Forms of Affordable Housing’ at OAA 2016

On Thursday May 12, 2016, from 4:00 to 5:30pm, John van Nostrand will be speaking about ‘Emerging New Forms of Affordable Housing’ at the OAA Conference 2016. Taking place at the Allstream Centre & Westin Harbour Castle Hotel from May 11-13, this year’s conference theme is Architecture Matters. The Value of Architects and Architecture’ is understood by architects, but is the message resonating with our clients, the public and those who use the spaces we create?

John van Nostrand’s lecture outlines how affordable housing was realized in the first half of the 20th century and how that process evolved in the second half of the century in ways that did not meet the needs of rapidly growing towns and cities. He will share case studies of the how cities across Canada and around the world are finding new ways to create or redevelop affordable housing today. Attendees will learn about new trends like laneway and infill housing, tower renewal, mixed-tenure housing, revitalization projects, and incremental housing.

Housing is a core focus of our business. We design innovative and adaptable buildings and master plans that respond to the immediate and future housing needs of diverse communities and all levels of income. We have a history of initiating and realizing housing projects that fill critical gaps in the market, and that are sensitive and adaptable to evolving cultures and contexts.
