SvN with Campus Living Centres have been selected by Mohawk College to provide architectural services for a new 150 bed student residence building at The Mohawk College Fennell Campus.
The new building forms part of a larger master plan for the northwest section of the campus where the existing residence building is currently. In addition to beds and amenity spaces, the intention of the new design is to provide a much needed student commons between the existing residence and new residence building and provide an enhanced pedestrian linkage to the main campus. A conference facility is also incorporated into the design.
Student Residence
The new 150-bed student residence building located directly south of the existing student residence. In addition to providing proximity to the food services located on the ground floor of the existing building, this location provides an opportunity to create a new pedestrian focused student commons. The building will also provide a pedestrian linkage between the existing student centre building to the east.
The resident’s rooms are two-bedroom suites with shared washroom and kitchenettes. The new residence provides study lounges throughout the building. Each floor has a total of 1,000 square feet of common space comprised of lounges, quiet and group study rooms.
The ground floor of the residence will contain the social heart of the building. A large lounge and games room occupies one half of the ground floor. The other half of the floor contains a laundry room, multi-faith room, meeting rooms and reception. These rooms look onto and have direct access to the landscaped commons.
Phase two of the development will complete the commons with a new 150-bed residence to the west of phase one. The drop off for all three buildings will be consolidated at the centre of the development with improved paving and the elimination of curbs.
In addition to the new residence building, a number of smaller renovations are proposed to the existing residence building to help enhance common spaces and the overall student experience.
Three Renovated Common Spaces per floor will be introduced. Envisioned as a mix of quite study, group study and group social spaces, the introduction of these rooms will provide much needed student spaces. Glazed screens and whiteboards provide surfaces to write in group study rooms.
