Beyond providing housing, tə šxʷhəleləm̓s tə k̓ʷaƛ̓kʷəʔaʔɬ plays an essential role in bridging campus life with the surrounding community. The five distinct buildings wrap strategically around the existing Gage Residences precinct, creating animated street frontages along Student Union Boulevard and Wesbrook Mall while forming intimate landscape courtyards and a vibrant urban plaza. Mixed-use spaces with high street visibility reinforce the project's role as a conduit, and welcome students into housing that feels integrated rather than isolated from the broader university experience.

Through extensive collaboration with Campus Planning, Student Housing, UBC Properties Trust, and neighbourhood stakeholders, we developed massing strategies that respect adjacent conditions while optimizing solar access to new courtyard spaces. The result is architecture that responds to its context while fostering the social infrastructure students rely on — spaces to gather, connect, stay active, and express themselves through music and dance, all alongside essential student services and administration.

As part of our comprehensive approach to campus community building, we also designed the Gage Courtyard Canopies in collaboration with Musqueam artist Kelly Cannell. The three sculptural structures transform the plaza between new and existing residences into a true gathering hearth. These playful forms follow pedestrian flow, while creating dynamic sun and shadow patterns that evolve throughout the day. In addition to providing shelter for sitting, eating, and studying, the canopies serve as a wayfinding tool, guiding students through the campus landscape while strengthening connections between indoor and outdoor community spaces.
