The revitalization of Regent Park in Toronto, led by a partnership between Toronto Community Housing and The Daniels Corporation, has begun to transform Regent Park into a vibrant mixed-use community. The latest addition to the neighbourhood is The Sumach, a $100 million, urban, pet-friendly rental residence for active seniors developed by Chartwell Retirement Residences, Welltower Inc. and The Daniels Corporation. The Sumach addresses the challenges of accommodating the population aged 75 and older, which will more than double in the next 20 years. Expected to be complete in September 2018, the building features 332 suites consisting of studios, one bedroom suites, two-bedroom suites and townhomes.

SvN provided the design, construction documentation and contract administration for this new 250,000 square foot seniors residence building. The residence will be geared towards active retired adults seeking maintenance-free living and social engagement with like-minded individuals. Residents will be able to customize their services and activities — including meal plan options — based on their personal interests and abilities.

It will offer a wide variety of amenities and activities, including 7000 square feet of retail space. The many amenities that will be provided for the occupants include a reading room, a theatre, exercise room, lounges and multipurpose rooms, garden plots, and outdoor barbeques with outdoor dining areas. A dining facility is provided for residents opting into the meal plan, and the bistro and café that are connected to the dining facility are open to the public. The building is being designed with flexibility to allow the adaptation of floors into assisted care levels to meet the changing needs of the residents.
