Hiring: Planner

We are looking for a Planner to join the team and contribute to a number of ongoing projects under the direction of SvN’s Senior Planners. The Planner position will provide you with the opportunity to work with a multi-disciplinary team of architects, planners, and community engagement specialists on a variety of private and public sector projects.

Based in our Toronto office, the Planner will support a broad range of projects from transit corridor plans to secondary plans (including mixed use, residential, employment and institutional areas) to zoning by-law amendments and plans of subdivision. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in applying their skills in urban planning, design and community engagement within an interdisciplinary team towards the creation of inclusive, participatory and pragmatic plans.

Requirements of the position:

  • Degree in Urban Planning or other related discipline
  • Minimum two years of professional experience in urban planning or comparable co-op/internship experience
  • Strong understanding of Ontario land use planning framework, the Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement, Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, Official Plans and Zoning By-laws
  • Knowledge of evolving trends in provincial and municipal policy, urban design, built form and growth management
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Adobe InDesign

We plan and design multi-modal transit hubs and corridors including station area plans, LRT corridors, transit stations and border crossings. We take a systems approach to the planning and design of infrastructure, integrating multiple development priorities while preserving and enhancing the quality of the overall landscape. Key projects include the Fort Erie Gateway Master Plan and the Allen District Urban Guidelines & District Plan.
We provide comprehensive support for approvals under the Planning Act that includes: the creation of clear, high quality documentation for amendments to official plans, zoning bylaws and building codes; producing planning applications and planning rationale reports; and representing our clients at Ontario Municipal Board hearings.
Housing is a core focus of our business. We design innovative and adaptable buildings and master plans that respond to the immediate and future housing needs of diverse communities and all levels of income. We have a history of initiating and realizing housing projects that fill critical gaps in the market, and that are sensitive and adaptable to evolving cultures and contexts.
We undertake site analysis studies, from site scale up to secondary plan scales.  We work with developers and public agencies such as Build Toronto and Ontario Infrastructure and Lands Corporation to complete due diligence and Highest and Best Use Studies for their lands. 
We prepare detailed Design Guidelines for municipalities in order to advance the policies, goals and objectives of Official Plans and Official Community Plans, specifically those related to the design of streets, parks, open spaces and buildings. We apply our combined technical and design expertise to the creation of effective and comprehensive guidelines.
We offer a full range of architecture, interior design, programming and construction management services for commercial and retail projects, especially within mixed-use developments.
